Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Comfort, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Comfort which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
