Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Comstock, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Comstock that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
