Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Crawford, TX.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Crawford that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
