Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.
There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.
These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in El Paso that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
