Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Enloe, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Enloe which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
