Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Flint, TX.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Flint which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
