There are addiction programs available in or near Fort Worth that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will ideally not engage in addict behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to address the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do deliver a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as secondary services, and it is encouraged.
