There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't also making them feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment goal is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
