Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - George West, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in George West that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
