Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Goliad, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Goliad that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
