Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Hawkins, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Hawkins which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
