There are programs offered in or near Hext that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications that are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opioid dependent client will ideally no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are dangers with side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria is possible at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are generally limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
