Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Horizon City, TX.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Horizon City which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
