Some facilities and doctors are authorized to give certain meds to opioid dependent clients, many of which are opioid-based themselves and are addictive. Methadone is the first med administered for this sole purpose, but there are a few more choices to pick from.
Methadone is an opiate and is meant to be taken at an outpatient medical center certified to dispense the med, that is taken daily in liquid or pill form. The price of the drug is approximately $150 a month. Buprenorphine is also an opioid-based med, and is a pill often taken every other day. But unlike Methadone that can only be given in well-regulated medical centers, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and administered in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is about three hundred dollars per month for the generic of the drug. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains the ingredient naloxone, which is a med which blocks the effects of opiates. An individual consuming this formulation, AKA Suboxone, would find it harder to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken on a daily basis, and costs around $450 per month. Naltrexone is another medication used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs aforementioned it's an opiate blocker and isn't an opioid. There is an option to take this medication as a monthly shot, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents a person from experience being high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 /month.
