Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Iredell, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Iredell which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
