Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Keller, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Keller that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
