Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Kemp, TX.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Kemp which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
