Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Kress, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Kress that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
