Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Lone Star, TX.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Lone Star which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
