Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Lueders, TX.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Lueders which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
