There are substance abuse programs available in or near Maud which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will instead no longer engage in addict behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some clinics do deliver a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary services, and it is encouraged.
