Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Megargel, TX.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Megargel which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
