DWI clients in rehab need to complete specific requirements to fulfill the conditions of their sentencing. Rehab programs that help satisfy these demands and terms, which are typically far more lenient than normal sentencing which would include steep fines and incarceration, are offered in Merit to provide alcohol education, therapy, and additional assessment for severe drug or alcohol issues.
Education is an essential tool used at rehabs treating DWI offenders. There are various levels of alcohol education which can vary by state. Level I education normally include 12 hours of education related to the effects of drugs and/or alcohol. This is the what someone with a first offense or someone under 21 will ordinarily be required to complete. Level II courses would include both education and group therapy in a court approved program. How long an individual will have to participate in therapy depends upon certain considerations, which can be, for example, the number of DWI's the individual has had, and the severity of the offense. Most often individuals will be sentenced to the Level II classes and therapy unless their blood-alcohol content was extremely low when they were arrested and there were no other significant infractions when the offender was arrested.
