Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Merit, TX.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Merit which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same neural receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications consistently so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dose which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do provide a small amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary services, and it is encouraged.
