Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Monahans, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Monahans which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
