Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Morse, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Morse that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
