Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Oklaunion, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Oklaunion that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
