Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Palestine, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Palestine which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
