Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Pampa, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Pampa which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
