Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Paris, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Paris which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
