Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Perrin, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Perrin which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
