Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Poynor, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Poynor that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
