Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Presidio, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Presidio that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
