Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Quinlan, TX.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Quinlan that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
