Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Quitman, TX.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Quitman which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
