Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Round Top, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Round Top that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
