Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Saltillo, TX.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Saltillo which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
