Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Santa Maria, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Santa Maria which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
