Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Sheppard AFB, TX.

There are substance abuse programs available in or near Sheppard AFB that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are used in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will ideally not engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be administered in a clinical setting.

Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and therapy as auxiliary treatment, and it is encouraged.
