Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Sheppard AFB, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Sheppard AFB that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
