Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Slidell, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Slidell which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
