Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Stamford, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Stamford which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
