Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Stonewall, TX.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Stonewall that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
