Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Sweetwater, TX.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Sweetwater which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
