There are recovery programs offered in or near Terlingua that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are dispensed in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors which make a person feel high from heroin or prescription pain killers are stimulated by these two drugs so that an opiate dependent client will instead not become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients are on these medications regularly so they don't experience withdrawal symptoms, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't at the same time making them feel euphoria. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as secondary services, and this is recommended and encouraged.
