Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - The Colony, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in The Colony which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
