One of the outpatient rehabilitation alternatives for clients in Trinidad battling with opioid abuse and addiction is called opioid maintenance therapy. Licensed clinics and doctors are authorized to dispense certain medications to opioid dependent clients, many of which are opioids themselves and are addictive. With low enough doses however, the individual doesn't feel high but also doesn't have intense cravings and is not experiencing opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first medication used for this sole purpose, but there are alternative choices currently to choose from.
Methadone is an opiate and is meant to be taken at an outpatient medical center certified to dispense the med, which is taken daily in liquid or pill form. The price of the drug is around $150 monthly. Buprenorphine is also an opioid-based med, and is a pill often taken every other day. But unlike Methadone that can only be dispensed in well-regulated clinics, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and administered in doctor's offices. The cost monthly of buprenorphine is about three hundred dollars a month for the generic of the medication. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, which is a drug which reverses the effects of opiates. An individual taking this version of the drug, also known as Suboxone, would find it harder to feel high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken every day, and costs approximately $450 a month. Naltrexone is an additional med used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other medications mentioned it's an opiate blocker and isn't an opiate. A person has the choice to take this drug as a monthly injection, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents a person from getting high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 monthly.
