Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Valley Spring, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Valley Spring that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
