Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Wadsworth, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Wadsworth which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
