Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Wallis, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Wallis that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
